Medical Physics

Medical Physics, in general, is a discipline in which the application of physics principles in health care environment are dealt with. It concentrates more on ionizing radiations like X-rays, Gamma rays etc. because of their wide applications in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, particularly cancer. Medical Physics candidates study all relevant physics, mathematics and radiation biology in detail related to ionizing radiations.

Professional responsibilities include : commissioning and acceptance of radiation generators, complete quality assurance of radiation generators, carrying out advanced treatment planning procedures for cancer patients, maintaining radiation safety in the health care industry in compliance with Radiation Protection Rules, Government of India etc. This course is approved by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and hence the candidates can become Radiological Safety Officers (RSO)-Level III in medical institutions on successful completion of RSO exam.

Though Medical Physicists are routinely employed in Radiation Oncology because of extensive Physics requirements, their employment in other clinical departments like Nuclear Medicine, Radiology etc. is also quite prevalent in western countries for efficient Physics and Radiation Safety services.
